Aquatics

Our pools generally open 1/2 hour after the Y facility opens and close 1/2 hour before the Y facility closes so our lifeguards have time to do all the safety and chemical checks.

Our outdoor pool opens for the summer season on Saturday, May 25th. Hours are Monday-Friday 10am-6pm, Saturday 10am-4:30pm and Sunday 1:30pm-4:30pm.

 

One way the YMCA practices a safe environment is to close swimming pools during severe weather such as thunder and lightning. The YMCA of the USA, FEMA, the American Red Cross, NOAA, and the National Lightning Safety Institute all advise to not use plumbing of any kind during thunder and lightning and to stay clear of windows.

Thunder is the sound of lightning, which is a warning that lightning is either present or will soon be visibly present. For these reasons, our YMCA aquatic facilities will close during thunder and lightning and we ask that you respect this policy. Our pools will close until 30 minutes after the last thunder or lightning

Swimming at the Y

Few things are more inviting than a bright blue, sparkling pool. At the Beaufort-Jasper YMCA we provide lessons, water aerobics, family fun, competitive swimming and more. So whether you’re a parent looking to help your little swimmer improve their stroke or a senior working to stay fit and socially connected, the Y has a pool, program or class for you.

Swim Lessons

Our swim lessons are designed to teach essential water safety skills and swimming techniques in a supportive and encouraging environment. Whether you're just starting out or looking to improve your strokes, our certified instructors are here to help you reach your goals.

Swim Starters: Parent/Child
Ages 6 months to 3 years old. Accompanied by a parent in the water. The child is introduced to water discovery
and exploration.


Stage 1: Water Acclimation
This is a child’s first experience in the pool without parental assistance. Children who seem scared or hesitant
in the pool should sign up for this class first.


Stage 2: Water Movement
The child is comfortable with water exploration. Forward movement in the water is encouraged and basic
self-rescue skills are performed independently.


Stage 3: Water Stamina
At this stage the swimmer develops intermediate skills to swim 25 yards and tread water for one minute.

 

Stage 4, 5 and 6: Swim Strokes
This stage builds endurance. Rotary breathing, breaststroke kick and butterfly kicks are introduced. The more
advanced swimmer is introduced to open turns and flip turns. Freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly skills are
refined.


Adult Swim Basics
Adult class covers water acclimation, water movement and water stamina based on individual skill level.

 

Private Lessons

One instructor with one student. Personalized attention and tailored lesson plans.

Private Buddy Lessons

 

2 students of the same skill level with one instructor. Personalized attention and tailored lesson plans.

Swim Club

All ages, swim styles and techniques are welcome to join our Swim Club!

 

All you have to do is register for the 50 Mile or 100 Mile club and start swimming! 1 mile is equivalent to 33 laps in our pool. You'll have until December 31st to complete your milage and will even earn fun prizes as you go.

Swim Team

Becoming a member of the YMCA Swim Team means fun, fitness and teamwork!
This competitive program offers children and teens ages 6-18, an opportunity to work with trained coaches to improve swimming skills, endurance and promote a healthy lifestyle.

 

Winter Season is September 9 - February 28

Stroke Clinics

Our Stroke Clinics are a great way for Swim Team members to build skills and confidence in the water. Must be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle without stopping and tread water for one minute. Swimmers will be coached in stroke development, mechanics, and stamina training to prepare for the upcoming swim team season.

CPR & Lifeguard Certification

We offer Lifeguard and CPR/AED/First Aid certification and re-certification courses by American Safety & Health Institute. See the link below for a list of our current class schedules.

Swim Instructors: $24-$28 per hour

 

Head Swim Coach: $18-$24 per hour

 

Lifeguards: $12-$16 per hour

(Lifeguard certification class is April 18th. After 6 months employment, you will be reimbursed for this certification!)

Water Safety Tips

  • Learn how to swim indoors this winter.We offer lessons year-round in our heated pool!

  • Have a pool yourself? Maintain pools and spas in the winter by keeping water clear, even if it is too cold to swim. If someone falls in they can be seen and helped faster.

  • Before the kids visit for the holidays, install a lockable safety cover for your spa.

  • On holiday, away from the Lowcountry? Know the dangers of ice on lakes and ponds. Always be watchful as you never know if ice thickness is the same throughout a body of water.

  • Be a Constant Eyes On (CEO), especially at other people’s homes. Know if there is water near or around homes your children visit.

  • When traveling to see relatives and family members, stress the importance of keeping gates closed, doors locked, toilet seats down and emptying buckets. Drowning can happen inside the home just as easily as outside the home.

The safety of all swimmers is our priority!  Therefore, a swim test is required of all swimmers under the age of 18 to determine their swimming competency so they will be safe in all areas of both the indoor and outdoor pools. Swim test can be done with our Head Lifeguard or Aquatics Director.

Patrons who are unable to pass the Y swim test MUST wear a coast guard approved life vest/jacket at all times.

NO EXTENDED Breathholding or Hyperventilation Is Allowed. Extended breath holding and/or hyperventilating can cause blackouts and drowning!
